You don’t have to live in constant stress mode. Instead of letting tension take over your days, you can use your breath as a powerful tool to calm both your mind and body. Yoga teaches us to return to the natural state our body truly wants relaxation.
Deep, mindful breathing is unique because it is both soothing and energizing. The energy that comes from a few minutes of conscious breathing isn’t jittery or overwhelming. It’s a calm, steady kind of energy the kind we need to stay balanced throughout the day. Slow, gentle, and quiet breathing sends a clear signal to your nervous system: it’s safe to relax.
There are countless books dedicated to yoga breathing techniques. Below is a simple 5-minute Breath Break you can practice daily. Before trying it, read through the instructions a few times so you feel comfortable and prepared.
The 5-Minute Breath Break
-
Sit with your spine as upright as possible. You may use a chair if needed, but avoid slouching. Place your feet flat on the floor, with your knees aligned over the center of your feet. If your feet don’t reach the floor comfortably, use a book or cushion for support. Rest your hands gently on the tops of your thighs.
-
Gently close your eyes and allow them to relax behind your eyelids.
-
Bring your awareness to your rib cage—notice the ribs at the front, back, and sides of your body. Your lungs rest safely behind these ribs.
-
As you inhale, feel your lungs filling with air and your ribs expanding outward and upward. As you exhale, feel your lungs emptying and your ribs moving back down and inward. Let the breath flow naturally—there’s no need to force it.
-
When you’re new to this practice, start with 2 to 3 minutes. Gradually build up to 5 or even 10 minutes. Try to set aside a specific time at least once a day. As you begin to notice how good it feels, you may find yourself naturally wanting to practice it at other moments too.
Just as one stressful moment often leads into the next challenge, taking a few minutes each day to relax through conscious breathing can slowly influence the rest of your life. Over time, this simple habit helps bring more calm, clarity, and ease into your daily activities.
